Peer review is the core procedure to ensure scientific standards, and most scientists are involved in it as both authors and as reviewers. Writing a peer review up to scientific standards requires a specific approach and structure, but there is rarely a forum to learn and discuss reviewing procedures. This seminar aims at giving an overview of the peer review processes and recommended practices, including emergent open peer review procedures. This will help participants both in conducting reviews themselves and in communicating with reviewers and editors during the process of publication.
Brief introduction to the seminar.
General introduction to peer review: What are the stages and mechanisms of peer review? Which strengths and weaknesses does standard peer review have? What should be considered for a fair, helpful and ethical review?
Publication ethics: Discussion of cases assessed by the Committee on Publication Ethics
Open peer review models: Which models for open peer review exist? What are their strengths and weaknesses? What is to be practically considered by reviewers and authors in the process of open peer review?
The editors’ perspective: What is most important for an efficient and informative review? What is the role of the journal editor in review? How can good communication between authors, editors and reviewers be ensured?
Q&A session, giving the opportunity for questions and discussion with and amongst the speakers
