Full W3 Professorship in Immunovascular Communication

The Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz Association (MDC) is a top-ranking international biomedical research center in Berlin. The MDC is devoted to interdisciplinary biomedical research aiming to uncover fundamental molecular mechanisms governing cellular, organ and organismal home-ostasis in health as well as disease overarching pathomechanisms. The ultimate goal is a speedy translation of research findings into clinical applications to im-prove prevention, early diagnosis, interception and treatment of disease.

The Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin is one of the largest university hospitals in Europe representing a single medical faculty that serves both Humboldt Universität zu Berlin and Freie Universität Berlin. Clinical care, research and teaching is delivered by physicians and researchers of the highest international stand-ard. The Charité extends over four campuses, and has close to 100 different Departments and Institutes, which form a total of 17 different Charité Centers.

The Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) is a biomedical research institution focusing on translational research and precision medicine. BIH uses a systems medicine approach to develop innovative options for prediction, prevention and advanced therapies for progressive diseases in order to improve patients’ health and quality of life. To realize its innovative plans in translational research, BIH builds on the strengths and expertise of its founding institutions Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz Association (MDC).

To strengthen translational research in the focus area of Translational Vascular Biomedicine jointly established by MDC, Charité and BIH, we invite applications for the following position commencing as soon as possible:

As a core faculty member of the joint BIH/MDC research focus area Translational Vascular Biomedicine the candidate will strengthen its mission to prevent and revert morbidity and progres-sive end organ damage in vascular diseases by unravelling, conceptualizing and treating local and systemic causes and clinical manifestation of vascular dysfunc-tion using an interdisciplinary approach.

The position will be recruited by the MDC and affiliated with the MDC as well as the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH). The group will be physically located in the new Kaethe-Beutler research building on the Life Science Research Campus Berlin-Buch and integrated in the highly collaborative and vibrant scientific environ-ment of Berlin.

The successful candidate will benefit from access to world-class technology platforms, pioneering in single cell technology, genomics, metabolomics and prote-omics as well as advanced stem cell, organoid and humanized disease model systems. The MDC, Charité and BIH provide excellent infrastructure available to the candidate, including advanced imaging facilities, drug-screening platforms, technology transfer opportunities and clinical research units offering access to clinical cohorts and biomaterial for translational research. The successful candidate will be engaged in teaching activities, supervise Master and Doctoral candidates, and participate in academic self-organization.

The tenured appointment with a salary according to the W3 level comes with a competitive tenure-package for an independent research group, which will be negotiated during the recruitment and additional allowances may be granted. Thereafter, the package will be subject to regular performance reviews every five years.

MDC, BIH and Charité seek to fill this position with an outstanding scientist with excellent track-record in vascular biomedicine focused on (pathophysiological) mechanisms in microvascular beds that underlie clinically relevant diseases. We are looking for candidates with a strong translational mindset and expertise in vascular biomedicine. Given the importance of the immune system and inflammation in vascular diseases, we particularly encourage candidates with a focus on interactions between inflammatory / immune cells and the vasculature to apply.

Besides scientific excellence demonstrating impact on the current understanding of fundamental mechanisms in vascular biology, the successful candidate is expected to present a strong translational mindset and corresponding research agenda. An excellent publication record demonstrating the quality of the research and a strong funding record are expected, as well as experience in the initiation of third-party funded, interdisciplinary national and international research pro-jects.

Qualifications for the position are as per § 100 Berlin Higher Education Act (BerlHG) junior professorship or postdoctoral thesis (Habilitation), or equivalent scien-tific achievement and teaching experience. Completed university degree as well as doctorate (Ph.D and/or M.D.) in medicine or natural sciences with significant post-doctoral experience.
