As the first rector, she set the tone

In 1945 she gave her first piano concert in her hometown of Wittenberg. She was only nine years old at the time and played pieces by Chopin, Liszt and Bach. After completing her Abitur, Annerose Schmidt studied at the Leipzig Academy of Music.

In the years that followed she won numerous awards and began her international career. She undertook concert tours to Poland, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria and the Soviet Union. From 1958 onwards, she went on concert tours that saw her perform in Western Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia.

In 1987 she became a professor and head of a master class for piano at the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin. In March 1990 she took over as rector of the music conservatory, the first woman ever to head a German conservatory. In 2003 she was awarded the Order of Merit of Germany for her enduring contributions toward enhancing the international reputation of the conservatory and of Berlin’s music life.
