At the forefront of looking back

Friederike Fless studied classical archaeology, art history and ancient history at universities in Trier, Würzburg and Mainz from 1983 to 1992. Back then, she couldn’t have known that ten years later she would become the first woman to hold a full professorship in classical archaeology at Freie Universität Berlin and then the first female president of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI).

Fless gained her doctorate from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in 1992 and then worked as a research associate and assistant lecturer in the university’s archaeology department. After time spent abroad on a travel grant, she joined the University of Cologne as an assistant lecturer. She qualified as a professor and switched to Leipzig University, where she worked as a senior assistant lecturer.

In 2003 she took up her professorship at Freie Universität Berlin. From 2004 to 2008 she chaired the German Archaeological Association (DArV); in 2006 she became a member of the directorate of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI), and since 2011 she has been its president. She has been an active member of the University Council at Leipzig University since 2017.
