Combating child malnutrition with courageous research

As part of an interdisciplinary research project in Bangladesh, she has since 2013 been investigating how malnutrition in young children can be prevented over the long term through training in horticulture, nutrition and hygiene. She was awarded the Prize for Courageous Science in 2018 for her perseverance and willingness to take research risks.

After studying medicine and writing her dissertation in Tübingen, she worked as a junior physician in Sweden. She then studied epidemiology in London, where she earned her second doctorate. In 2014 she qualified as a professor in Heidelberg and became head of the Unit of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Heidelberg Institute of Global Health (HIGH) as well as deputy head of HIGH.

In 2019 she became Germany’s first university professor of climate change and health, a joint appointment of Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. In 2020 she was appointed to the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU).
