Here, research into major widespread diseases - from cancer to cardiovascular diseases to infections - was to be integrated and strategically developed. The next step was to create a lighthouse in Berlin, the German capital, to reshape collaboration between university and non-university research. Schavan's colleague in the Berlin Senate, Jürgen Zöllner, supported the "Berlin Institute of Health" project, not least thanks to the generous donation from Johanna Quandt. The Charité, as the joint university medicine of Humboldt University and Freie Universität, was set as a partner on the clinical side; there were already connections to the MDC as an excellent center in basic research, which the BIH, founded in 2013, strengthened and expanded: Thus, translational medicine was anchored in the city of Berlin and also promoted throughout Germany.
