The QUEST Center is looking for a student to assist with “science of science” studies on using automated screening tools to improve the quality of data visualization in scientific publications. Scientists routinely use bar graphs to present continuous data. This can be very misleading, as many data distributions can lead to the same bar graph and the data may suggest different conclusions from the summary statistics alone. We’re testing interventions to encourage scientists to use more informative graphics.

  • Activities would include validating automated screening tools by determining what types of figures publications include
  • Project may lead to a master’s thesis
  • Student will learn to conduct science of science studies
  • Fun working environment
  • Be part of a team that’s committed to improving transparency, rigor and reproducibility in science

Skills

  • English language
  • Recognize common figures
