At the beginning of August, the co-working space of the Digital Health Accelerator at the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) opened its doors to eight new innovation teams from Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz Association. BIH Innovations, the joint technology transfer office of BIH and Charité, supports these teams in the Digital Health Accelerator program in the development and transfer of their digital health innovations into medical applications.

After two cohorts with a total of ten teams, the interdisciplinary teams from research and clinic will advance their innovations in the following topics: Digital early detection of dementia, faster diagnosis of acute kidney injury, detection and management of the pregnancy complication preeclampsia, personalized diagnosis and therapy support for tumor patients, digital platform for diagnosis and therapy support for implant infections, detection and therapy of internet addiction with a focus on computer games, digital solution for tissue visualization and analysis in histopathology, and personalized therapy support for genetic muscle diseases.

In the first phase of the Digital Health Accelerator program, “Prototype”, the teams develop patient- and user-centric technical prototypes and receive funding, coaching and mentoring from experts in areas such as product and business model development, clinical validation and market access, as well as access to the co-working space. Program participants from the last two cohorts will also be on hand to share their experience in developing medical innovations. At the end of this program phase, the teams will present their projects at a “Demo Day” at the end of the year. In the second program phase, “Build”, the most promising projects will continue to receive support in product development and transfer to medical application, i.e., until spin-off formation, industry cooperation or licensing.
