From a scientist´s perspective, creating a scientific spin-off seems to be an “unsolvable problem” if you have not done it yet. There are many questions that might come to mind, such as: Where does the money come from and what legal framework has to be considered? How can I find a team or even a CEO if I don´t want to give up my science completely?
In the Online-BIH Lecture "How to Create a Scientific Spin-off" on 5 June 2020 Dipl. Ing. Sonja Jost, CEO of DexLeChem GmbH, will approach these and other questions related to the start-up phase of a science-based company. As a jury member of the EIC Accelerator of the European Commission, Jost is familiar with the various stages that project groups have to undergo and the obstacles they might face. Which hard and soft decision criteria play a role for investors and will the best science always win? Having co-founded and initiated several campaigns and networks that support the translation process of scientific findings into industry, Jost will share most helpful insights for creating a scientific spin-off and on how to turn them into successful businesses.
About the Speaker
Sonja Jost is an inventor and engineer. She is CEO of the Green Chemistry startup DexLeChem GmbH, which she co-founded in 2013. Jost gives advice to governmental organizations, scientific institutions, NGOs, as well as several political parties in Germany, the U.S., and in the EU. She is a member of different advisory/supervisory boards and high-tech juries, e.g. the Helmholtz Association, the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH), the “Chemical Invention Factory” of TU Berlin or the U.S. peer-reviewed journal “Green Chemistry Letters and Reviews”.
Jost received various awards and recognitions for her work. EditionF, Handelsblatt, as well as ZEIT online listed Jost among “25 female inventors who are changing our world”, Capital magazine named her repeatedly “40 under 40” entrepreneurs, and the economic business magazine Business Punk chose her as #1 out of their 2018 watch list “100 startups, makers, creatives”.
