Why do so many drug candidates work well in animal models of disease but only a few of them really serve the patients’ needs? This is one of the fundamental questions that has limited the success rates in pharma R&D. Lack of good enough disease understanding is one reason for these limitations, deficits in the understanding and/or the quality attributes of the drug candidates is another. This is where translational medicine comes into play.

In the Online-BIH Lecture "An Industry Perspective" on 31 July 2020 Florian Gantner, Senior Vice President, Translational Medicine & Clinical Pharmacology, at Boehringer Ingelheim, will discuss how biomarkers can be used in rational decision making in drug development and will present a few success stories. He will further address a few general hurdles in the field of translational medicine, and share some own experiences in partnership between academia and industry.
