The BIH QUEST Center has already developed structures and established measures to improve the quality and value of biomedical research being carried out at the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH), Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, and the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz Association (MDC). For example, the BIH QUEST Center recently rewarded, for the first time, scientists at Charité and the MDC with the Open Data Award for disclosing the original data of their publications. This is so important because freely accessible original data allows other scientists to check and verify that published results are in fact substantiated by the data collected. This original open data can also be used to answer further research questions.

In addition, the BIH QUEST Center recently named John Ioannidis from Stanford University as an Einstein BIH Visiting Fellow. Professor Ioannidis, one of the most highly cited scientists worldwide, has established the Meta-Research Innovation Center Berlin (METRIC-Berlin) at the BIH. This institute is also committed to increasing the quality of biomedical research.

“We will therefore provide the Berlin University Alliance with advice and support on issues relating to quality of research, because our methods and measures could also lend important momentum to other scientific fields,” says Ulrich Dirnagl, head of the BIH QUEST Center. “For it is, of course, essential that research carried out at an excellent university be of the highest quality and value. We want to help make this possible.
