CHRISTIAN STEIN, ASCENION

PROF. ULRICH SPECK, CHARITÉ

One key component when turning an idea into a product or service on the market is to ensure protection of relevant knowledge via a patent. Once there is a relevant set of knowledge that can be turned into a business idea, the use of this knowledge needs to be agreed upon. Licensing agreements are official agreements on the chosen way forward between the university/institution and the startup team or a partner from industry that help keep the rights of involved parties protected. The major goal is to identify how the patents can be used and acted upon and who does this. There is usually significant development needed to get from a patent to a working product that will survive on the market, and this work falls under these agreements.

Once academic entrepreneurs want to become active, they become motors to bring the idea forward and acquire an additional role to being part of their university in also being part of a startup team that negotiates with the university. A helper in this process can figure out agreements with some kind of partner, be it the startup of the inventor, a different startup or other industry partners.

In this forum we want to better understand how the licensing process works from the perspective of the startup and the helper, in this case Ascenion. Christian Stein, CEO of Ascenion, will give an overview of this whole process. Ascenion has been on the scene since its foundation in 2001, and supports 23 research organisations across Germany in all aspects of technology transfer today. In the second session, Ulrich Speck from Charité will share his experiences and insights of licensing.
