The Israel Innovation Authority (IIA) supports international collaborations of Israeli startups with partners from science and research worldwide. In September 2019, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the Berlin Institute of Health and the IIA, with the aim of strengthening international collaborations and translational research. The IIA has similar collaborations with healthcare institutions or university hospitals in the USA and Canada, but the collaboration with Charité is the first of its kind in Europe. Building on this memorandum of understanding, a program has been implemented to develop, test and pilot groundbreaking technologies, products, services and wearables at Charité/BIH. Providing optimized access to patients, researchers, and data at Charité are part of this program and serve to jointly address issues of high medical need and ultimately improve patient care. In other words, this collaboration is aimed at further implementing the BIH mission 'From Research to Health'.

Israel is also called the "Startup Nation" due to the innovation potential there and the highest number of startups per inhabitant worldwide. In a 2019 Bertelsmann Foundation study that examined digital strategies, technical readiness and data use in the healthcare system, Israel landed in fourth place out of 17. Israel has emerged internationally as a driving force in the digital health industry.

This collaborative project is about combining clinical expertise from Charité and BIH with Israeli innovative entrepreneurship to implement advances in digital and mobile medicine into clinical practice through translational research. As part of this process, clinical researchers interested in collaborating with an Israeli startup and conducting clinical research projects are sought. Researchers can also apply for funding from the IIA for existing collaborations with Israeli companies. As a Charité/BIH researcher, you have the opportunity to set up your own study with support from the Clinical Study Center (CSC).
