Almost all bodily functions and their interaction are controlled and regulated by different cells of the immune system and their messenger substances. The aim of this clinical research field is to understand this interplay and its balance depending on age and disease, to make it diagnostically usable and to implement it in therapy concepts. This requires interdisciplinarity in basic research and the comprehensive use of modern technologies in order to understand how immune cells function in the context of inflammation, age-related and tumour-related matrix changes and in interaction with different biomaterials.

In addition, we develop immunological tools for the Centre's other research fields, including cell analysis and cell sorting methods as well as biomarkers for immune monitoring of regenerative therapies
