This research field is concerned with investigating mechanisms of tissue metabolism that control muscle catabolism. We research the development of novel treatment concepts to help prevent muscle atrophy as a complication of acute and chronic diseases.

Our research focus is the pathophysiology of cachexia and muscle atrophy (sarcopenia) in chronic heart failure, strokes, COPD, CKD, cancer, and elderly patients. To this end, we conduct clinical and experimental studies on metabolic regulation in heart failure with regard to functional capacity and mortality.

Goals

  • To develop novel mechanisms and therapies to combat cachexia and muscle atrophy
  • To develop novel approaches in the treatment of heart failure through drug repurposing
