The QUEST 1,000 € Preregistration Award

Preregister your preclinical studies challenge – Increase the credibility of your results and get early credit for your ideas!

'Transparency and independent replication are core values of science. However, scientists must publish, which is more likely with positive results, even at the expense of transparent, reproducible research. Thereby the reported positive results often do not reflect the original hypothesis. What is good for science and what is good for scientists are not always the same.

Preregistration adds additional credibility to results by documenting in advance what will be tested. Preregistration separates hypothesis testing (confirmatory) from hypothesis generating (exploratory) research. Both are important. However, the same data cannot be used to generate and test a hypothesis, which often happens unintentionally. With preregistration, confirmatory analyses are planned in advance in order to retain the validity of their statistical inferences, and exploratory analyses are reported as post hoc investigations that might inspire confirmatory tests in future studies.' The Center for Open Science has launched a Preregistration Challenge. The QUEST Center supports their Preregistration Challenge with its own challenge, focused on preclinical studies!

In clinical science, preregistration of controlled clinical trials is a prerequisite for publication in most relevant journals (Consort statement). However, in preclinical research, which is currently suffering from a reproducibility crisis, preregistration is a novel concept.

QUEST is giving away these awards of 1,000 € to first/last/corresponding authors (BIH, MDC or Charité affiliation) of preclinical research papers on preregistered (basic or translational, not clinical) studies. Papers must have been published 2017 onwards.

Preregistrations in many forms are eligible: for example in journals like Biorxiv, or in outlets like Figshare or Aspredicted or in other appropriate formats that are accessible on the internet and provide a tamper-proof time stamp. Registered reports (e.g. at eLIFE or Cortex) and embargoed preregistrations are also eligible.

The award (travel costs or consumables) will be administered through MDC or Charité. Prizes can be spent until the end of 2019. Awards are given on an ongoing basis. Awardees will be featured on the QUEST web pages.

To claim your award, send an email with a short statement and the publication as well as preregistration as attachments to quest@bihealth.de.

Publications of authors (independent of the author´s position) which are also QUEST employees cannot be considered.

Each researcher may apply to every call only once.
