The guiding principle of the BIH is translational research in order to translate findings from basic research more quickly into clinical applications and to develop medical diagnoses, therapies and preventive measures that are more targeted and useful for human beings, as well as to make greater use of clinical observations for questions in basic research. Doctoral stipends are competitively advertised by the BIH for doctoral projects leading to the title of Dr. med., MD/PhD or Dr. med. dent. that are in line with the guiding principle of the BIH. They are announced annually in October/November/December with the start of work on the following year starting on April 1.

Program structure

BIA's medical research student stipends are aimed at matriculated humanities and dentistry students* who are enthusiastic about research. A stipend is granted for a clearly defined research project that is to be carried out independently and supervised by a person working in a scientific capacity with the aim of obtaining a doctorate. The maximum duration of a BIA-MD scholarship is 12 months. The research task must be designed in such a way that the doctoral thesis fits into the objectives of the BIH and comprises exclusively scientific work of at least 6 months.

Funding requirements

Eligible to apply students of medicine and dentistry enrolled at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, who are admitted as Dr. med., MD/PhD or Dr. med. dent. students, whose supervising person is employed at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin or at the Max-Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine. Doctoral students with excellent doctoral projects started during their studies can be funded as enrolled doctoral students in the BIH-MD beyond the 3rd state examination. Please note that we only award stipends for future work and not retroactively. The awarding of a scholarship is excluded if a simultaneous support by a third party is already in use or in case of an employment contract with Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin.

Scope of funding

A doctoral stipend is awarded as a full-time scholarship for the duration of the research work or for the full-time equivalent of a thesis. In justified exceptional cases, an extension of the stipend can be granted (see information sheet).

Stipend basic amount

1.200€ per month. If applicable, family allowance of 154€ as well as childcare allowance up to 256€ (for 3 or more children). No material costs and travel allowances.

Reporting obligations

In the event of approval, the BIH Biomedical Innovation Academy must be informed at least every 12 months about the status of the research work, in accordance with scientific practice, in full and with a list of the results achieved by then. You will receive an email with a link to the BIH reporting portal in due course.
