The Berliner Sparkassenstiftung Medizin is committed to research successes in medicine and healthcare in Berlin - for a future in which all people can live and grow old with dignity and health.

It supports the development of new medical solutions in Berlin that are intended to give courage, hope and confidence to sick people and their families. In the past, it has funded major projects in heart, cancer and rheumatism research in Berlin.

The current funding focus is on rare diseases. These are diseases that occur so rarely that there are hardly any drugs or therapies available for those affected. Around four million people in Germany are currently affected by one of the 8,000 different rare diseases. Taken together, they are not that rare. The aim of their work is therefore to give affected people a better quality of life through targeted research and at the same time to raise awareness of this issue in society.

The Eva Luise and Horst Köhler Foundation and the Berliner Sparkassenstiftung Medizin have jointly developed a Junior Clinician Scientist for Rare Program (JCS4R). The funding provided by the two foundations offers young female doctors not only sound training in clinical practice and research with additional further training opportunities tailored to the needs of research into rare diseases, but also the opportunity to network with (inter)national experts in rare diseases.

The Professor Herbert Harnisch and Brigitte Harnisch Foundation is committed to more equal opportunities in medical training and supports talented students of dentistry, oral and maxillofacial medicine and human medicine, primarily with monthly scholarships. In addition, as part of its postgraduate funding, it supports doctors who have done excellent scientific work during their participation in the Dental Clinician Scientist Program or Junior Dental Clinician Scientist Program by covering the costs of participating in the programs (time off for science and research).

The Professor Herbert Harnisch and Brigitte Harnisch Foundation is based in Cologne. It was established at the request of the founder, Brigitte Harnisch, after her death in 2017 and pursues exclusively and directly charitable purposes.
