Practices of Development and International Cooperation with focus on Global Health Engagement

The PRODIGY consortium strengthens research collaboration between the Berlin University Alliance and the global south. Within this initiative, the QUEST Center explores the current state of global health research, identifying areas for improvement and providing data to inform future discussions.

Background / Rationale

Global Health Research (GHR) plays a critical role in addressing global health challenges, ranging from infectious diseases to healthcare access disparities. Like other areas of clinical research, GHR should prioritize transparency and patient-orientedness to maximize its usefulness for science and society. However, there is a lack of comparable analyses to assess the implementation of these practices in GHR. Additionally, GHR may face culturally sensitive particularities in defining and operationalizing research usefulness.

Objectives

This study aims to illustrate how past status-quo analyses on responsible research could be in principle applied to GHR, and what conceptual and methodological particularities are to be analyzed in more in-depth.

Methodology

For sampling, we include three sources: global health journals, clinical trial registries with a focus on global health disease, and global health funders' websites. Each one of these sources provide a unique perspective on responsible research in GHR, offering opportunities but also challenges. We explore each sampling strategy and report results on established research indicators.

Expected Results / Implications / Perspectives

With the results from this study, we anticipate a better understanding of opportunities and challenges in developing a monitoring system for global health research. This can contribute to reporting of results based on established responsible research indicators in global health research, and to knowledge sharing among diverse global health stakeholders. At the same time, this can point towards areas that require attention. In this way, we aim to lay the basis for future dialogue and to encourage deeper global health engagement.
