In recent years, the increase in publications in biomedical research has not only revealed a considerable lack of translation into patients’ benefits, but also questioned research quality issues in biomedical research. In their critical assessment of the current state of biomedical research the authors of the article series ‘Increasing Value, Reducing Waste‘, published in 2014 in The Lancet, identified a number of deficits regarding transparency, robustness and reproducibility of research data generated in biomedical laboratories. In this context, the Berlin Institute of Health is currently running a programme to replace analogue documentations with electronic laboratory notebooks, a frequently mentioned institutional approach to strengthen research quality. RE-PLACE will systematically evaluate this implementation process.
