Third Call for Projects of the BIH Translation Hub "Organoids and Cell Engineering"

We are pleased to announce that the BIH Translation Hub Organoids and Cell Engineering opens its third call for project proposals. Until December 11, 2020, the Hub invites its members to submit project applications.

The BIH Translation Hub connects scientists and clinicians from different disciplines and institutes to enable the development of innovative technologies and research projects. Supported by calls for the funding of collaborative research projects, the Hub drives the development of personalized medicine approaches and advanced therapies for progressive diseases in the BIH research programs. The projects must show relevance to the Hub’s mission. All members of the Hub are eligible as primary submitters.

Eligibility

Only members of the OCE Hub are eligible to apply for funding as primary submitters. The number of project proposals per primary submitter is limited to one. BIH/Charité/MDC scientists who dispose of independent research funding as well as participants of the BIH/Charité (Digital) Clinician Scientist Program can apply for Hub membership here.

Scope and duration of funding

In 2021, a total budget of 250,000 € will be available for project funding. Submitters have to assign their proposals to one of the following two categories:

  1. Category 1 Project: Requested funding can be up to 60.000 €, only one Category 1 project will be funded by the Hub in 2021
  2. Category 2 Project: Requested funding can be up to 30.000 €, multiple Category 2 projects will be funded by the Hub in 2021

The respective project budget has to be spent until the end of 2021. Funding is intended for consumables only (including core facility service fees).

It is planned to offer the possibility of a one-time one-year-extension for successful and positively evaluated projects in the next project call.

Project requirements

All project proposals have to demonstrate a translational relevance and are required to support the OCE Hub mission (found here). Additionally, they should aim at further development of the Hub and/or be of interest to a broad scientific community.

Applications establishing a new cooperation (e.g., between Hub members, across institutions or disciplines or joint teams of junior & senior groups or basic scientists and clinicians) are highly encouraged.

Essential evaluation criteria include:

  • Supporting the Hub mission
  • Translational potential of the project
  • Scientific quality and originality
  • Adequate project plan (sample quality, experimental design, statistics, data analysis and management) and budget
  • Consent of involved BIH Core Facilities
  • Necessary regulatory documents (e.g. ethics approval etc.)

Selection procedure

Projects will be selected in a single-stage evaluation by a decision board composed of at least five impartial representatives from the BIH Translation Hub and Focus Area steering committees. All steering committee members of the OCE Hub who are not a primary submitter or partner of a project proposal are included in the board and additionally joined by at least three steering committee members of other Hubs or Focus Areas.

Application process

Applications need to be submitted via the online application portal using this project application form.

If you plan to make use of BIH Core Facilities or further BIH technology providers, please use this consent of the responsible Core Facility and add it to your application.

If applicable for your proposal, please add all available regulatory documents to your uploaded file in the application portal, e.g., the vote of the ethics committee (dt: Votum der Ethikkommission), the application for animal experiments (dt: Tierversuchsantrag), or the sacrifice notification (dt: Tötungsanzeige).

Deadline for the call is Friday December 11, 2020 at 4 pm.
