“Democratising Drug Development Through Human Genomics”

Drug development depends on accurately identifying molecular targets that both play a causal role in a disease and are amenable to pharmacological action by small molecule drugs or bio-therapeutics, such as monoclonal antibodies. Errors in drug target specification contribute to the extremely high rates of drug development failure.

With examples, this presentation illustrates how integrating knowledge of genes that encode druggable targets with those that influence susceptibility to common disease has the potential to radically improve the probability of drug development success.

About the Speaker

Aroon Hingorani is UCL Professor of Genetic Epidemiology; former Director of the UCL Institute of Cardiovascular Science (2011-2021); Cardiovascular Programme Lead for the UCL Hospitals NIHR Biomedical Research Centre; Director of the UCL British Heart Foundation Research Accelerator; and co-Investigator in the Understanding Mechanisms of Disease Initiative in Health Data Research UK. He is Consultant Physician at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and an NIHR Senior Investigator.

His current work focuses on the use of genetic studies in populations as a tool to identify and validate drug targets, using the Mendelian randomisation principle, to improve efficiency in pharmaceutical development. He also has an interest in critical evaluation of the use of genomic and biomarker data for disease prediction and stratification.
