A trailblazer in gender studies

She is considered one of the pioneers of women’s and gender history in the German-speaking world. She has been honored with the Order of Merit of Germany for her historical research. The State of Berlin awarded her the Louise Schroeder Medal, and she received the honorary title of City Elder of Berlin in 2016.

Karin Hausen studied history, sociology and German philology at universities in Berlin, Marburg, Münster, Paris and Tübingen and received her doctorate from Freie Universität Berlin in 1969. From 1978 to 1995 she worked as a professor of economic and social history at the Institute of History at Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin). From 1995 to 2003 she served as the founding director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Women’s and Gender Studies in the Department of Philosophy at TU Berlin.

For over 17 years she was the dedicated co-editor of L’Homme: European Journal for Feminist History.
