Data from clinical trials are the basis for modern medical decisions and are considered the gold standard for evaluating treatment effects. The "SHARE-CTD" network, which stands for "Sharing and re-using clinical trial data to maximize impact", aims to increase the value and trustworthiness of medical research and further implement the principles of open science. By promoting the sharing of patient-level clinical trial data along with associated materials such as protocols and data dictionaries, "SHARE-CTD" aims to promote external re-analysis, which builds trust and maximizes the utility of data provided by clinical trial participants.

The main goal of the network is to train a new generation of biomedical researchers who have a deep understanding of the processes, values, and benefits of data sharing. To this, they will be trained in areas such as data science, trial regulation, meta-research, and ethical, legal, and social issues. Supported by 9 Principal Investigators (PIs) and an extended team of 12 academic and non-academic partners, the network provides doctoral students with an excellent platform for training, research and secondments. Prospective students can apply for one of the 11 PhD positions (deadline: January 31), which will start in the fall of 2024.

Scientifically, BIH contributes two key projects. The first project addresses innovative approaches to trial data anonymisation and their importance for sharing clinical trial data ("Medical Informatics", PI: Fabian Prasser). The second project focuses on the development of automated screening tools for data sharing, data reuse, and general reporting issues in clinical trials ("Meta-Research and Automated Screening", PI: Tracey Weissgerber).
