Monitoring & Evaluation Unit
Based on a systemic understanding of organisational change processes, the Monitoring & Evaluation Unit examines whether and how the activities and initiatives of the QUEST Center contribute to improving quality-oriented research practices. To meet the methodological requirements of impact-oriented evaluations, the unit has developed the COMPASS Monitoring & Evaluation System. It combines a modern IT infrastructure with theory-based research approaches and measurement tools that enable a targeted analysis of the QUEST Center’s intervention logic.
Christiane Wetzel, who leads the M&E Unit, studied pharmacy, biochemistry, and science management in Berlin. Her scientific profile combines preclinical biomedical research with technology transfer, science management, and evaluation methodology. Her scientific career began in experimental biomedical research. At the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) in Berlin and at the University of Toronto in Canada, she studied, among other things, the mechanisms of touch and pain perception, as well as the fundamentals of learning and memory. Together with colleagues at the MDC, she identified a potential therapeutic target molecule for the treatment of neuropathic pain. The underlying research findings were further developed as part of an industry collaboration she co-led and are protected by an international patent. Working at the interface of academic research and early drug development increasingly shifted her scientific focus towards the conditions under which robust and societally relevant scientific knowledge is generated and successfully translated into practice.
The work of the M&E Unit is closely aligned with the QUEST Center’s goal of increasing the societal value and benefits of biomedical research. In its research projects, the M&E Unit therefore examines the organisational processes, factors, and conditions that shape the intended reform process. Based on theory-driven research approaches, the M&E Unit works in interdisciplinary research teams that combine qualitative and quantitative research methods.
