Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs)

You want to send (biological) material (e.g. cell lines, mouse lines) or substances (e.g. antibodies, plasmids) or import them into the Charité?

A Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) is a binding agreement that regulates the rights and obligations of the contracting parties involved (e.g. other research institutions or industry).

Charité BIH Innovation supports you in concluding such an MTA.

How is an MTA concluded? We distinguish three cases:

Send us the filled out MTA document of your partner in editable Word or PDF form without signatures. If the contract partner does not have any templates available, you are welcome to use our MTA template. You will receive this template from us by email upon request (see below).

To shorten inquiries, name the material and describe its use as specifically as possible. Also, mention any related contracts, if applicable.

We will review the MTA internally and, if necessary, renegotiate with the other party if the terms are not in your or Charité's best interest. Once each party has agreed, we will send you the final document for signature.

Return the signed document to us for signature by Technology Transfer Charité BIH Innovation. Depending on your preference, we will forward the signed document directly to contract partners or return it to you.
The process is very similar to (1). The difference is that you fill out our MTA templates and send them to us.

Furthermore, there are two cases to distinguish:

For research institutions, you can use this MTA template. Please fill it in and forward it to the contractor for review. After that, please send the completed template to us. (Important: in change mode without signature).

Industry partners/commercial entities - you will receive this template from us by email upon request. After internal assignment, it will be forwarded (often by the scientist) to the contract partner for review.
For human samples, genetic information is considered personal data. Therefore, very strict data protection regulations apply. Supplementary documents are required. A Material Data Transfer Agreement (MDTA) fulfills most of the special requirements in such cases.
