Berlin Diversithon (Digital Event)

Only 17.7% of English language biographies and 15.6% of German language biographies in Wikipedia are for women. There is also an underrepresentation of certain ethnicities and people of colour in science. Our Diversithon is looking to balance it out, but we need your help!

We invite you, whatever your gender, to join us for the exciting Wikipedia edit-a-thon online.

We all use Wikipedia, so why not help it grow and become more diverse? By participating in our event, you can contribute to and improve Wikipedia. Editing scientists’ biographies is an important part of science communication. It is easy to learn and can be done from wherever you are located.

During the event, you will learn more about Wikipedia and editing from our keynote speaker Kelly Foster. After that, you can either start editing Wikipedia entries for scientists or learn how to get started in one of the workshops. We offer one workshop for beginners in English and one in German with 15 places each.

Kelly Foster is a public historian, working both online and “on road” as a London Blue Badge Guide. She is the chapter lead for Creative Commons UK and is involved in global initiatives to encourage more people of African heritage to contribute to Wikipedia and it’s sister projects. Kelly has worked with community/independent archives in London for over 15 years and is a founding member of TRANSMISSION, a collective of archivists and historians of African descent. She currently is the Wikimedian-in-Residence on the Making African Connections project.Program/Pre-event instructions
No prior experience of Wikipedia editing is necessary. All you need is some enthusiasm about the project and a computer.

Having an account will enable you to fully take part in the event and is highly recommended.
You are welcome to bring your own of scientists to write about. In case you need some inspiration, we will also provide a list of women and ethnic minority scientists who justify a good Wikipedia entry in either English or German or both.
