Abstract

Peer review is the core procedure to ensure scientific standards, and most scientists are involved in it as both authors and as reviewers. Writing a peer review up to scientific standards requires a specific approach and structure, but there is rarely a forum to lear and discuss reviewing procedures. This seminar aims at giving both and overview of the peer review processes, and which practices are recommended. This will help participants both during the reviewing process and in communicating with reviewers and editors during process of publication.

09:45-11:00 General introduction to peer review: What are the stages and mechanisms of peer review? Which strengths and weaknesses does standard peer review have? What should be considered for a fair, helpful and ethical review 11:00-11:15 Coffee break 11:15-12:00The editors’ perspective: What is most important for an efficient and informative review? What is the role of the journal editor in review? How can good communication between authors, editors and reviewers be ensured?12:00-13:00Biostatistical assessment: What should reviewers concentrate on? What are typical statistical errors? Which tools and resources can reviewers use, and when should an expert be consulted?
