Timothy Errington will draw on his experiences from conducting the Reproducibility Project: Cancer Biology (1, 2) and discuss various aspects that need to be considered when planning and conducting confirmatory animal studies, such as preregistration – with a focus on Registered Reports – and how it can intersect with journals and funders, and adversarial collaboration.

About the speaker:

Timothy Errington is Director of Research at the Center for Open Science (COS; cos.io) that aims to increase openness, integrity, and reproducibility of scientific research. In that position he conducts and collaborates with researchers and stakeholders across scientific disciplines and organizations on metascience projects aimed to understand the current research process and evaluate initiatives designed to increase reproducibility and openness of scientific research. Such projects include large scale reproducibility projects, such as the Reproducibility Project: Cancer Biology (3) and the DARPA supported Systematizing Confidence in Open Research and Evidence (SCORE) (4) and evaluation projects of new initiatives, such as open science badges (5), Registered Reports (6), and a novel responsible conduct of research training (7).

He  received his PhD in Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology from the University of Virginia, MA in Molecular and Cell Biology at UC Berkeley, and earned a BS in Biology and Chemistry at St. Lawrence University.
