Talk
hosted by Ludovic Vallier
Fibrosis has been the Achilles heel of bioengineering and a key limitation for the production of artificial organs exceeding 1cm of thickness. To address this challenge, we use bioengineered bile ducts (BBDs) as a proof-of-principle system to study the mechanisms driving fibrosis in lab-generated tissue following transplantation in pigs. We then apply this knowledge to generate fibrosis-resistant BBDs, which could be used for the treatment of biliary atresia, the leading cause for liver transplantation in children.
About the Speaker
Fotios is Group Leader at the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute and Consultant Hepatologist at Cambridge University Hospitals. He also serves as Theme Lead for Liver Research at the NHS Blood and Transplant Research Unit and Programme Co-Leader at the University of Hong Kong’s Centre for Translational and Stem Cell Biology. His research focuses on regenerative medicine and liver disease, and he has been recognised with multiple international awards, including the UEG Research.
