Abstract
The individual and societal burden of brain diseases is increasing as the global population ages, yet successful treatments are scarce. Analysis of neuroimaging data offers great potential for better understanding and treating brain diseases, yet the majority of research has focused on exploring possible analysis methods, rather than exploiting them for clinical benefit. Cole will talk about his work on the so-called ‘brain-age’ paradigm, an effort to measure the brain’s biological age using neuroimaging data. He will discuss results from the validation and application of the brain age paradigm in neurological and psychiatric diseases as well as approaches for taking brain-age work from the lab into the clinic. This research incorporates neuroscience, geroscience, machine-learning and medical science, with a view to demonstrating that having an older-appearing brain is relevant for clinical decision-making.
About the Speaker
Prof. Dr. James Cole
- Centre for Medical Image Computing, Computer Science, University College London
- Dementia Research Centre, Queen Square Institute of Neurology, University College London

James Cole is Associate Professor of Neuroimage Analysis at the Centre for Medical Imaging Computer (CMIC) and Dementia Research Centre (DRC) at University College London (UCL). He completed his PhD at King’s College London and has since researched various neurological and psychiatric diseases using multi-modality neuroimaging analysis methods at King’s, Imperial and UCL. His current research interests include a particular focus on ageing, neurodegeneration and dementia. His work uses machine learning, deep learning and related statistical methods with the goal of developing clinically useful neuroimaging tools. He is Principal Investigator of the MANIFOLD Lab.
