Equal Opportunity & Diversity
With its research, the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) strives to achieve meaningful medical benefits for patients and citizens. This requires the diverse perspectives and experiences of many different people, active in both the Institute’s scientific and non-scientific domains – i.e., science management or administration. Equality and diversity are therefore also an essential prerequisite for innovation and high-quality scientific work.

Equal opportunity & Diversity Unit
The BIH is committed to a discrimination-free, gender- and diversity-sensitive organizational culture. Our goal is to create structures that value diversity, break down barriers, and provide all employees—regardless of their diversity dimensions—with the best possible opportunities to realize their potential.
A key focus is on supporting women scientists as well as trans*, inter*, and non-binary researchers, particularly in underrepresented fields. At the same time, we address broader societal inequalities and promote an inclusive work environment through anti-discrimination measures and awareness of unconscious bias.
We also integrate gender and diversity aspects into research to enhance scientific excellence and make translational research accessible to all.
Our initiatives are structured into four action areas:
- Individual Support – Targeted support for underrepresented researchers
- Structural Change – Sustainable measures for equality and diversity
- Organizational Culture – A respectful and inclusive work environment
- Diversity in Research – Intersectional perspectives for better science and medicine
