Diagnostic Significance of the BIH Spatial Diagnostics Platform

The medicine of the future is data-driven, precise, and fast. With the new Spatial Diagnostics Platform at the Berlin Institute of Health, we are turning excellent health research into tangible reality. By combining all relevant technologies and expertise into a single platform and placing it at the heart of the Charité, we eliminate existing barriers and take tissue diagnostics to a new level. As a pioneering project, this strategic alliance between interdisciplinary academy and strong industry partners bridges the gap between cutting-edge research and direct patient care.

Platform Stations

  • 3D-Histology

At the core of our Spatial Diagnostics Platform, we utilize modern technology to revolutionize classic histology workflows. Using optical clearing, fluorescence labelling with nanobodies, and high-end light sheet microscopy, we generate fast optical sections and quickly build a complete high-resolution digital model of human tissue morphology. We are working towards fully automated sample preparation, sample handling and imaging to enable objective and reproducible high-throughput diagnostics.

  • Imaging-guided multi-omics

3D Histology is tissue-preserving and inherently digital, enabling us to precisely target relevant parts of the tissue to build a multi-layer molecular stack and connect genotype, molecular state and spatial phenotype. We facilitate proteomics for molecular identification and quantification with high depth. In addition, we use MALDI imaging for molecular histology with which we can map tumor microenvironments and analyze heterogeneity. By adding cutting-edge sequencing by expansion, we identify the upstream drivers like mutations and epigenetic states.

  • Integrative Data Analysis

We utilize high-performance computing infrastructure at the BIH and Charité to integrate extensive raw data from imaging and molecular analyses. Central data handling and high-performance computing, combined with machine learning and advanced data visualization will help us gain novel insights into human tissue samples.
