Medical Computational Research Environment (MediCoRE)
As part of MediCoRE, a national high-performance computing platform for health data is being developed. At its core, the platform is designed as a Secure Processing Environment (SPE) and aims to help address the challenges associated with data usage and the development of data-driven solutions and AI models in health research.

Key Features of MediCoRE:
- Secure Processing Environment (SPE)
- Secure and GDPR-compliant data processing
- AI-optimized; regulatory and technical
- Integration of a wide range of data types and datasets from cross-site healthcare and research sources
- Cross-site access at the national level
- EHDS-ready
- Patient portal, archiving solutions
- Core Unit-based offering of supporting scientific, technical, and innovation-promoting services
The Core Units are specialized functional units that provide essential services and expertise, enable the efficient use of the platform, and promote the interoperability and security of health data.

Backround
The project was initiated in Q3/2024 by a consortium comprising BIH and four Helmholtz institutions (Helmholtz München, CISPA, DKFZ, and MDC Berlin with an application under the acronym SuperCoHD in the BMFTR prioritization process for large national research infrastructures (FIS). Based on feedback from this process, BIH is currently conducting a pilot phase with the gradual development of a minimum viable product by Q3/2027.
Objectives
The goal is to demonstrate the feasibility and added value of such a platform and to prepare for future calls for proposals aimed at strengthening research infrastructures and platforms.
The MVP constitutes the first technically, organizationally, and procedurally viable preliminary stage of the planned national high-performance computing infrastructure for the responsible handling of sensitive medical data, integrated into European health data initiatives.
With the help of the MVP—connected to a cross-site data room—the first computationally intensive use cases for methodological and medical research can be implemented.
The pilot phase involves the collection and differentiating use cases that will guide the development of MediCoRE, as well as the establishment of an initial infrastructure based on local pilot projects, which will include Core Units and to establish a one-stop shop for health data research tailored to different user groups.
The close integration of methodological research with health research and innovation enables broad coverage of the translational value chain, from health data all the way to products and services for and with citizens and patients.
