Accordeons: Reasons for the BIH

  • Location

Right in the heart of Berlin: we offer a central workplace with several locations across the city. Our main site, situated directly on the River Spree with a view of Berlin Cathedral from the office, and the Rahel-Hirsch-Center, right next to the Mitte campus of Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, are both well connected.

  • Flexibility

We offer flexible working hours, part-time work, holiday leave, and flexitime/flexible working days.

  • Benefits

We offer a salary in line with the TVöD (labor agreement for the public sector), an annual bonus, a pension scheme (VBL), capital-forming benefits, corporate benefits in the areas of travel, sport, leisure, shopping and much more, and a JobRad scheme.

  • Identification

Turning Research into Health – that is our motto! Our mission is the targeted translation of scientific findings into innovative diagnostic options, treatment approaches and healthcare applications. To this end, we offer meaningful work that helps other people.

  • Diversity, Inclusion and Equal Opportunity

Patient-centred, successful innovations and high scientific standards can only thrive when diverse perspectives and experiences come together. That is why diversity, inclusion and equal opportunity are our top priorities.

  • Internationality

Diversity also means that the BIH has an international atmosphere: approximately 25% of our staff come from countries outside Germany (as of December 2025). People from over 50 nations are represented at the institute. In addition, there are many colleagues who were born and/or raised in Germany but also have roots in diverse cultures and speak different languages.

Furthermore, at the BIH we also offer the opportunity to participate in international projects and collaborate with colleagues worldwide.

  • Cohesion

We foster cohesion at the BIH through our working climate with diversity, equity and inclusion. This includes cross-departmental communication, regular exchanges and team or staff events (after-work events, the Charité Christmas market, the BIH New Year’s gathering, the BIH Lecture, academic events such as symposia, evaluations and much more). Our First Contact Points serve as an initial point of contact for any issues.

  • Health

At BIH, the health of our staff is very important to us. At our Occupational Medicine Centre (AMZ), you have access to medical advice and a range of other health promotion services. These include, for example, vaccinations, preventive care, and advice in the event of workplace accidents or occupational illnesses.

  • Professional Development

We offer a wide range of opportunities for personal development. These include further training, courses, workshops on professional and social topics, development programmes for managers, and seminars on stress management. We also offer onboarding events, career-focused staff appraisals, coaching and qualification agreements. Vocational training programmes and internships during your studies are also available at BIH.
