Registration BIH Charité Clinician Scientist Retreat 2025

We are delighted to invite you to this year's BIH Charité Clinician Scientist Retreat! The retreat will take place on November 18, 2025, at Villa Elisabeth (Invalidenstraße 3, 10115 Berlin-Mitte). Around 150 participants are expected to attend. Our retreat offers a special space for scientific exchange and interdisciplinary encounters. Together with the fellows of our programs, we design the program to give their topics a stage and create real added value for their research and networking. The aim is to open up new perspectives, share ideas, and strengthen the dialogue between participants in the long term. There will be a varied program of lecture sessions, workshops, and poster presentations.

In the evening, this year's alumni of the BIH Charité (Junior) (Digital) Clinician Scientists Program will be honored at a farewell ceremony.

Brief summaries of the Workshops

Workshop 1: International experience – insights, opportunities, strategies

Organizers: Jan Wandrey, Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (CVK), Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin; Jochen Michely, Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (CCM), Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin; Philippa Seika, Department of Surgery (CCM), Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin

As a group, we cover a wide range of experiences abroad – from early to late career stages, from short to long-term stays, in the UK and the US, from basic to clinical research, and from various disciplines. This allows us to offer participants a wide range of perspectives and illustrate the different paths to going abroad in a practical and motivating way. The workshop combines short, focused inputs with interactive small groups and a concluding plenary discussion. Thanks to the rotation principle, all participants benefit from the different perspectives.

Workshop 2: Writing applications – from idea to successful application

Organizers: Milad Rezvani, Department of Pediatrics with a focus on Gastroenterology, Nephrology, and Metabolic Medicine (CVK), Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, and Anna Kufner Ibarroule, Department of Neurology with Experimental Neurology (CCM), Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin

In this interactive workshop, Anna Kufner and Milad Rezvani share practical tips and personal experiences related to writing grant applications. In addition to fundamental aspects such as professional design and a personalized approach, they also discuss strategic considerations: How do I develop an ambitious but realistic research question? How can I put myself in the reviewers' shoes? And how can I present my own strengths in a convincing way? Using case studies—from successful applications to those that were initially rejected—participants will receive concrete suggestions on how to make their own applications more successful.

Workshop 3: Mastering the trilemma – clinical practice, research, and personal freedom

Organizers: Sophy Denker, Medical Clinic with a Focus on Hematology, Oncology, and Tumor Immunology (CVK), Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, and Aitomi Bittner, Department of Hematology, Oncology and Cancer Immunology (CVK), Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin

How can the triad of professional obligations, research tasks, and personal life realities (e.g., care work) be organized in a sustainable way? What structural options and tried-and-tested models enable lasting success?
Based on a short preliminary survey of the (J)(D)CSP fellows, a moderated panel (equality/family services, funding organizations, professors with care experience, tandem leadership) will answer the cohort's prioritized questions in short keynote speeches followed by a discussion round.
The aim of the workshop is to present experience reports, success stories, and challenges and translate them into concrete, everyday strategies so that tomorrow's doctors can effectively pursue their personal and professional goals.

If my preferred workshop is already fully booked, I would like to take part in the following workshop:
