Keynote: Dr Katherine Deane "Accessible Research"
We are delighted to kick off the Diversity Month 2025 with a lecture and workshop by Dr Katherine Deane, a leading voice on accessibility and inclusion in research and academia.
We are honored to welcome the inspiring Dr Katherine Deane to the Diversity Month 2025 program. With her vast expertise in accessibility and inclusivity, Dr. Deane will lead thought-provoking events designed to help us create a more inclusive research and work environment.
Dr Katherine Deane
Dr Katherine Deane is Associate Professor in the School of Health Sciences at the University of East Anglia (UEA) in Norwich. She conducts research on the co-created management of long-term conditions and disabilities. Specifically, she focusses on the day-today activities disabled people have to undertake in order to optimise their wellbeing. This includes taking your pills correctly, sticking to a restricted diet, doing your exercises, and managing your anxiety and depression. She has published over 80 peer-reviewed journal articles, which have been cited over 8000 times, and gained over £11 million pounds in research grants. Her work informs NHS and WHO guidelines. She is also a wheelchair user with a variety of long-term conditions and has used this expertise to become the University’s Access Ambassador. She has improved the accessibility of UEA’s campus substantially over the last ten years. She has provided access advice to the Houses of Parliament, research funders (UKRI, EPSRC, The Wellcome Trust), theatres, museums, science centres, train companies, television companies, water and power companies, roadworks equipment manufacturers, and many scientific conferences. Inclusivity has become a critical focus in research, but translating this commitment into practice can feel overwhelming. In this lecture, Dr. Deane will explore how improving disability access for researchers and their research populations can elevate both the quality and impact of your work.

Creating accessible laboratories for disabled researchers may seem challenging, but it’s essential for fostering inclusivity in technical spaces. In this interactive workshop, Dr. Deane will guide you through practical steps to ensure that your lab is welcoming and functional for all members of your research team.
