What is this Workshop about?

The workshop offers all employees, who are interested in the transfer of research results into practical applications, an accessible introduction to topics such as innovation, intellectual property rights, and commercialization. It is designed for both those who are actively considering a spin-off and those who, without such plans, wish to acquire a solid foundation of knowledge to be able to contribute to discussions in the field of technology transfer.

Positive Feedback from the Workshop

Initial feedback on the workshop was gathered first during an internal trial run by BIA and SPARK-BIH at the beginning of the year, and subsequently through a pilot program as part of the curriculum for the BIH Charité Clinician Scientist Program in April. The response was consistently positive and provided valuable insights for further developing the format. “The workshop is really interesting—thank you very much!” summarized one participant. “Actually, I’ve already filed an invention disclosure with a colleague, so I was already familiar with some of the topics. But since doctors tend to be quite removed from patents and IP, I found the points discussed very helpful.”

Another participant noted, “I found the workshop very informative and the scope very appropriate. Although I don’t have a specific invention in the pipeline, just knowing that, if the need arises, it’s better to contact you first and wait before publishing is certainly an important insight for many clinician-scientists. The fact that there’s a team at Charité that can support me on the path to a patent, and understanding what a patent is useful for—all of that was very helpful information.”

What happens next

The workshop will be continuously refined based on participant feedback. For example, we plan to incorporate concrete practical examples from Charité and testimonials from researchers who have already taken steps toward commercialization into the workshop. The workshop will be offered in both English and German.

In the future, it should be possible to integrate the workshop into all current and existing curricula. This means it can, for example, become part of PhD training and be made available as a continuing education and professional development option for postdocs and administrative staff. After the summer break, we plan to offer the workshop to fellows of the Translational Tandem Program for Gene- and Cell-Based Therapies (nTTP-GCT) and supplement it with specific examples from this field. The workshop is already available as a standalone educational format from CBI and BIA, for example for team training, for working groups, and for teams at Charité and BIH.
