About the award

Since excellence in translational research is furthered by gender equality, supporting the equal participation of women and men is an important objective in all BIH undertakings.
The BIH Award for Early-Career Women Scientists in Bioinformatics recognizes the outstanding achievements of women scientists working in the field of bioinformatics and enhances their visibility. Laureates of the award will be inspiring role models for subsequent generations of women working in the field of bioinformatics.
In 2016, the award will be presented for an outstanding dissertation that advanced translational research in the field of bioinformatics. An important criterion in awarding the prize is also the potential of the laureate in a promising career path in bioinformatics.
The prize fund amounts to 10,000 Euro and is intended to support future research of the laurate in the field of bioinformatics.

Selection

A commission consisting of members of the BIH bioinformatics steering committee and women professors from the field of bioinformatics will select the winner of the award.
In exceptional cases, the prize may be shared if there is more than one person meriting the award.

Award ceremony

The BIH Award for Young Women Scientists in Bioinformatics will be presented at the “German Conference on Bioinformatics” (12-15.09.2016) held in Berlin.
Actual travel costs as well as accommodation and participation fees will be covered for the awardee.

Eligibility

Women scientists who have received their doctorate with distinction (summa cum laude or highest distinction according to the doctoral regulations) from 1 February 2014 (reference date is the date on the dissertation certificate) can apply directly for the award.
Publication of dissertation results (or parts thereof) in renowned scientific journals is a premise for the award.

Documents to be included in the application

The following documents must be included in the application (in German or English):
  • Detailed CV including a description of future career plans
  • Key findings of the dissertation (2 page maximum)
  • Electronic version of the dissertation
  • Copy of dissertation certificate
  • Academic letter of recommendation
