BIH Lecture Series | Prof. Susanne Herold: From Infection Research to New Antiviral Drugs

On 14 February 2020 Prof. Susanne Herold, Professor for Pulmonary Infections and Head of Infectious Diseases Section, Department of Medicine II at the Uniklinikum Gießen and Marburg (UKGM) will give a lecture on the subject "From Infection Research to New Antiviral Drugs" as part of the BIH Lecture Series "Frontiers in Translational Medicine - Scientific and Structural Challenges".

Acute lower respiratory tract infections represent an increasing public health problem worldwide with high mortality rates. The lack of almost any pharmacological treatments underscores an urgent medical need for novel, effective therapeutic approaches. The Herold Lab addresses the role of mononuclear phagocytes in host defense, lung injury progression, and in regeneration processes of the lung epithelium in pneumonia-induced ARDS, with a special focus on influenza virus infection. The researchers aim to elucidate molecular interactions at the virus-host interface within the infected alveolome, to ultimately define therapeutic targets for intervention to attenuate lung injury and drive tissue regeneration after severe influenza virus pneumonia and other viral infections, e.g. coronaviruses.

The lecture will take place at 12 noon in the Hans Virchow-Hörsaal, Philippstr. 12 at the Campus Mitte.
