Hub Clinical Translation - Project Update

The BIH Translation Hub Clinical Translation invites its members to exciting presentations of projects funded by the hub.

The BIH Translation Hub Clinical Translation is happy to announce its second online event
on 6 September 2021.

The online event “Hub Clinical Translation - Project Update” Series features all projects funded by the Translation Hub in the years 2019 and 2020 and is intended to give the Hub community an overview about past and ongoing projects and research activities.

Overall, the Hub aims to accelerate clinical innovation and to optimize the quality of clinical trials. Thus, it functions as a central catalyst for clinical research and therapy development at the BIH, Charité and MDC, developing the necessary infrastructure for them to translate innovative ideas into high-quality clinical studies.

To promote this mission, we are delighted to present three talks featuring projects funded by the Translation Hub in 2019 and 2020.

About the Speakers

Prof. Dr. Britta Siegmund:

Britta Siegmund is Director of the Department of Medicine – Gastroenterology, Infectious Diseases, Rheumatology at the Campus Benjamin Franklin and Medical Director of Charité Centrum 13. She went to Medical School at LMU in Munich and Harvard Medical School. Graduated in Munich, spent her postdoc time in Denver Colorado and her medical training at the Charité in Berlin. She had an Emmy-Noether Group (2003-2007) as well as a Heisenberg Professorship from the DFG. She has been Director of the Department of Medicine – Gastroenterology, Infectious Diseases, Rheumatology since 2013. Her Clinical and Scientific focus are inflammatory bowel diseases, where spatial organization of immune cells is a crucial information.

PD Dr. med. Philipp Enghard:

Philipp Enghard works as a senior physician in the clinic specializing in nephrology and internal intensive care medicine at the Charité. Born in Frankfurt/M in 1977 and raised there, he studied medicine at the FU and HU Berlin as well as in the USA, Australia, Portugal and Brazil. After receiving his doctorate and beginning his clinical training in rheumatology in 2005, he has been working in the Department of Nephrology and Internal Intensive Care Medicine since 2008. His scientific focus is on the interaction of immune and renal cells in various renal diseases, concentrating mainly on the state-of-the-art analysis of urine cells. His team is doing research on exactly this complex of topics and is one of the leading groups in urine analysis worldwide.

Dr. rer.-medic. Michael Schmück-Henneresse:

Michael Schmück-Henneresse is a biotechnologist and PI at the BIH Center for Regenerative Therapies (BCRT). His post-graduate scientific training is in adaptive and onco-immunology at the Charité and at Baylor College of Medicine Houston. Over the past 13 years, his research has focused on understanding the basic processes that control T cell migration and activation in autoimmunity, transplantation and cancer. His research focuses on how T cells coordinate an effective immune memory against virus-infected or malignant cells and how this can be specifically attenuated in autoimmune diseases or after organ transplantation. To this end, he is developing technologies that can detect, characterize and genetically reprogram T cell specificity, as well as strategies to optimize the quality of T cells for therapeutic purposes. His goal is to develop diagnostic tools to predict the immune response, as well as to provide new treatment options by developing appropriate T cell products.
