The Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) is a biomedical research institution focusing on translational research and occupies an important place in Berlin’s scientific landscape.

The federal government and the State of Berlin intend to convert the BIH into an independent and financially autonomous area of excellence within the Charité in accordance with changes in state law. The BIH is to become – alongside the university hospital and the medical faculty – the Charité’s third pillar. It will be jointly funded by the federal government and the State of Berlin, and have a total annual budget of around €80 million.

The BIH seeks applications for the position of

Scientific Director and Chair of the Board of Directors

The holder of this management position will be responsible for the executive direction, coordination and development of the Berlin Institute of Health. The Chair of the Board of Directors will receive a seat on the Executive Board of the Charité. She or he will be responsible, along with the Administrative Director, for building up and strategically advancing the Berlin Institute of Health. Strategic and scientific planning and performance monitoring will take place in close collaboration with the Charité and the Administrative Council as well as with the federal government and the State of Berlin.

We are seeking an internationally renowned and academically acclaimed individual from the field of biomedical or translational research with strong organizational and strategic planning skills. Candidates will have relevant management experience in senior roles at biomedical research institutions and have a clear interest in establishing a globally competitive translational research environment. The successful candidate is expected to have excellent powers of persuasion and be highly assertive as well as possess very strong integrative and moderation skills.

Candidates must also have very good knowledge of the German research system, ideally with experience in research management at German university hospitals.

Other requirements include the ability to interact confidently in the political arena and champion the Berlin Institute of Health both internally and externally with clear and effective communications, particularly on the international stage. Fluency in German and English is also required.

The appointment is for five years and may be extended. Remuneration is based on the salary levels of prominent university professors, with the possibility of performance-related remuneration.

The federal and state governments have set the goal of recruiting outstanding women for prominent executive and decision-making positions in academia and research. We are therefore particularly interested in receiving applications from female candidates who meet the criteria outlined above. The selection committee is committed to ensuring equal opportunities of women and men and to conducting a transparent recruitment process.

Applications from suitably qualified individuals with disabilities, or equivalent, will be given special consideration according to Book IX of the German Social Code.
