The "Lean European Open Survey on SARS-CoV-2 Infected Patients" (LEOSS) is a registry collecting data on the epidemiology and clinical course of COVID-19. To provide data at the rapid pace required in the pandemic, LEOSS follows an Open Science approach, releasing Open Data to the public in real-time. To realize this, a data anonymization pipeline has been developed in collaboration with our group that protects the privacy of patients included, while safely releasing data with only minor impacts on its quality. The development process involved qualitative as well as quantitative risk assessments and the implementation of quantitative anonymization procedures based on mathematical and statistical models. This has been realized based on ARX, a data anonymization software also developed by our group. As there is a lack of clear recommendations and descriptions of real-world applications of anonymization procedures, we believe that our work can support or guide other researchers facing similar challenges.
