Priv.-Doz. Dr. med. Marie Schafstedde, fellow of the BIH Charité Digital Clinician Scientist Program and pediatrician at the Clinic for Pediatric Cardiology/Congenital Heart Defects, has received – together with her colleagues Dr. med. Anastasia Schleiger and Priv.-Doz. Dr. med. Sarah Nordmeyer  –  the Gerd-Killian Project Funding (total endowment 60,000€). In search of a yet unidentified hepatic factor, the three pediatric cardiologists are investigating hepatic venous blood from children with congenital heart defects using proteomic, metabolomic, and cell culture analyses. The absence of this hepatic factor is associated with the development of pulmonary arteriovenous malformations, leading to serious impairments and a greatly diminished quality of life for the affected patients. If they succeed in identifying potential candidates for this hepatic factor, future research could focus on pharmacological substitution of the hepatic factor and thus a curative therapy for the affected patients. Congratulations!
