"A Novel Care Approach Utilizing Digital Technologies for Post-Operative and Procedural Patients: Care Hotel and the Mayo Clinic."

This Digital Health Lecture will focus on an innovative approach to healthcare utilizing virtual care platforms and digital technologies. The lecture will showcase how the Mayo Clinic Florida has leveraged these resources to enhance care for post-surgical and procedural patients in a unique hotel setting.

The presentation will highlight the key features of this virtual care platform, including the tools and technologies used to monitor patient vitals, provide virtual consultations, and deliver personalized care plans remotely. The talk will also explore the role of anesthesiologists in leading alternative care pathways for various patient populations.

Attendees of this lecture will gain valuable insights into how digital technologies can be used to transform healthcare delivery, particularly in post-operative and procedural care. The presentation will provide a real-world example of how the Mayo Clinic Florida has implemented a successful virtual care platform, and how anesthesiologists can play a pivotal role in driving innovation and improving patient outcomes.

Ryan Chadha

Ryan Chadha, M.D. is a consultant and Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL. Prior to joining Mayo in 2016, he completed his residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital and his fellowship in liver transplant anesthesiology at Columbia Presbyterian NYPH. He is member of the liver transplant division and currently the Division Chair of Multispecialty Anesthesiology, overseeing the anesthetic care for patients undergoing General/GI/Plastic/Colorectal Surgery, ENT, Urology, Gynecology, Ophthalmology, and Endoscopy/Bronchoscopy at Mayo Clinic in Florida. He is the Vice-Chair of Mayo Clinic Florida Hospital Practice Subcommittee and Vice-Chair of the tri-site Mayo Clinic School of Medicine Student Promotions Assessment and Review Committee (SPARC). Outside of Mayo, he is the Vice-Chair of International Liver Transplantation Society Vanguard Committee and an active member of the Society for the Advancement of Transplant Anesthesia. He is an oral board examiner for the ABA Applied Exam, and a member of the Editorial Board for the journal Liver Transplantation. His interests include perioperative outcomes in liver transplants, anesthesia for endoscopy and interventional bronchoscopy, and alternative care model for post-surgical and procedural patients.

Michael J. Maniaci

Michael J. Maniaci, M.D. is the Enterprise Medical Director of Virtual Care in the Mayo Clinic Center for Digital Health, the Enterprise Physician Lead for the Advanced Care at Home program, and the current Medical Director of Mayo Clinic Hospital in Florida.  His previous leadership positions include the Chair of the Division of Hospital Internal Medicine in Florida, the Associate Chair of Inpatient Practice for the Department of Medicine in Florida, the Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program, the Associate Medical Director of the Mayo Clinic Multidisciplinary Simulation Center, and the Medical Director of Patient Experience in Florida.  He currently holds the academic rank of Associate Professor of Medicine in Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.

He received his M.D. from Saint Louis University Medical School in 2003.  He completed his residency training at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in 2006 and is boarded in Internal Medicine.  He then completed a one-year Chief Residency program at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in 2007.  Following this, he joined the Hospital Internal Medicine Practice at Mayo Clinic in Florida.

He has a passion for innovation and technology in the medical field.  He is recognized as leader in faculty development for the teaching of simulation medicine and has had several invited professorships to teach faculty development in simulation both in United States and throughout Asia.  His current focus is developing the Advanced Care at Home program and the Care Hotel program, Mayo Clinic’s first expansion into the virtual home hospital and surgical aftercare realm.

Akira-Sebastian Poncette

Akira-Sebastian Poncette, M.D. currently serves as the section lead for Medical Data and Systems, as well as the lead of the Patient Monitoring and Alarm Management working group, and Deputy Director of the Institute for Medical Informatics, a position he has held since 2021. As a physician and scientist, Dr. Poncette is renowned for his expertise in medical informatics and digital medicine. He received his clinical training in internal medicine and anesthesiology and is a fellow of the Charité BIH Digital Clinician Scientist program since 2020. His primary focus is on the development and implementation of digital health and patient monitoring technologies, as well as alarm management processes and systems.

He approaches his research with a translational focus, collaborating with the CMIO’s Task Force Monitoring, which he also coordinates. Dr. Poncette's ultimate goal is to position the Charité as a pioneer in intersectoral and interoperable (tele)monitoring. By doing so, he aims to establish the foundation for personalized and predictive medicine, with an unyielding dedication to ensuring patient safety.
