Recycled Conference – BIH PhDNet

A conference with little preparation needed: mainly focused on discussing your science and connecting with other PhD students. No hard deadlines, just bring your (recycled) poster and join us in talking about the exciting projects happening at BIH!

We would like to invite you to the Recycled Conference of the BIH PhDNet on 9 July 2026 at the Rahel-Hirsch-Center in Berlin. The event brings together PhD researchers from BIH and partner institutions for a day of scientific exchange, discussion, and informal networking.
The conference combines a mental health workshop, a poster session, and a social evening, reflecting different aspects of PhD life. We would also love to co-create a buffet during the day, so feel free to bring a snack or drink to share if you would like.
Agenda
- 10:00–13:00 – Managing Inwards and Upwards (DragonFly Mental Health)
- 14:00–18:00 – Poster Session with snacks
- from 18:00 – Social gathering (open end)
You are free to participate in every single part of the program separately. Please indicate your choices in the registration form. Please note that places for the workshop are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. If you realize that you can no longer attend, please cancel your registration so someone else can take your place. You can always update your registration using the link provided in your confirmation email.
The BIH PhDNet was newly established in January 2026 with the aim of representing PhD student perspectives across BIH. We aim to strengthen exchange between research groups, build a more connected PhD community, and create spaces for scientific and social interaction within BIH and the broader Berlin research environment.
We are looking forward to spending the day with you!

Managing Upwards – communicating effectively with supervisors
The first part of the workshop focuses on improving communication with supervisors and group leaders. We will look at how to set expectations, establish and renegotiate boundaries, and address challenges that often come up during a PhD. Short group exercises will help translate the strategies into practice.
Managing Inwards – staying steady in challenging communication situations
The second part of the workshop focuses on how we respond internally to pressure, expectations, and difficult communication in the academic environment. We will work on recognising patterns, reflecting on reactions, and developing practical strategies to stay confident and grounded in supervisory interactions.
The workshop is tailored to the PhD context. If you have additional topics you would like to discuss, please include them in the application form. We will forward this information to the facilitators.
