Pharmacological treatment, especially for certain illnesses, is a complex process involving many people. It requires precise coordination and meticulous documentation. With the introduction of the German electronic patient record (ePA), the digitally supported medication process (dgMP) is being implemented. Its goal is to help physicians, pharmacists, and patients to plan, document, and monitor medications clearly and in an up-to-date manner – enhancing safety and transparency. However, it remains unclear how comprehensible and helpful the dgMP actually is for complex therapies.

This is precisely where the ePAMedix project comes in. It investigates the extent to which the dgMP fulfills important requirements in the context of complex medication plans. As exemplary use cases, the project focuses on pharmacological therapies for epilepsy and bipolar disorder.

First, the project team analyzes international literature and experiences. In the next step, it incorporates feedback from healthcare experts as well as affected patients. To better understand the needs and challenges involved in presenting and using complex medication plans, the team is conducting surveys and group discussions. Patients, healthcare providers, and pharmacists will be interviewed. Based on the results, the team will develop concrete suggestions for improving the dgMP and coordinate these with other experts.

The project is funded for three years with a total of approximately €1.4 million.

The insights gained can contribute to making the dgMP more understandable, safer, and more practical for everyday use – especially for people with complex medication plans.
