Secure platform for health information eXchange (sphin-X)
As part of a collaboration between the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) and the industry association sphin-X, we developed a joint, modular data model (“Common Data Model”) for the structured and cross-sector collection of medical data. Openness, transparency, and alignment with FAIR principles and international standards (such as FHIR, SNOMED CT, LOINC) were at the heart of our work. Initially, three use cases were modeled: prostate cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and neuromuscular diseases.
The data model described, with its definition and standardization of metadata, which is also to be published, represents an important milestone in establishing collaborative data spaces in Germany. Our goal is to make this compatible with the European Health Data Space (EHDS) initiative and to enable both national and international research projects and care initiatives. The data model we have developed is not in competition with the MII, but is a flexible further development that uses existing standards and makes them applicable across sectors.
