Digital Medicine and Interoperability

We transform the global health ecosystem through the power of interoperable information and technology

Our Vision
Prof. Dr. Sylvia Thun

Our vision

Our vision is a connected digital health infrastructure that enables new technologies for more accurate disease prediction, better technology development, personalized treatments, promoting active patient participation, and ensuring high data security. In cooperation with hospitals, research institutions, the healthcare industry, and policymakers, we plan, develop, and test interoperability and documentation solutions using international standards at the local, national, and global levels.

Topics

Digitalisation

Digitalisation should not be an end in itself. It should save time. This can be achieved if data is recorded in a structured manner from the outset and can then be used multiple times—a principle that can be described as “document once, use many times". [translated by author]

European Health Data Space (EHDS)

Projects such as the Medical Informatics Initiative and NFDI4Health define research data infrastructures for Germany, which can be harmonized with other large projects such as KBV/gematik and NAMSE on the basis of international standards. Together, these infrastructures position Germany in a position to help shape the European Health Data Space (EHDS) by strengthening interoperability, enabling data exchange, and promoting a federated European health data ecosystem. This role is reinforced by participation in the EU project xShare, which defines specifications for the European format (EEHRxF) for the exchange of electronic health records.

Further topics

Standardization committees

The members of our Working Group are represented in DIN, IHE, and HL7 Germany standardization committees, as well as international committees such as GA4GH, WHO, CEN, and ISO. This allows us to influence the development of international standards. This becomes increasingly important given the growing amount of data influencing the global market, research, and patient care.
