Critical appraisal is an essential part of the scientific process to assess the validity of scientific findings. But what does critical appraisal mean in the context of our research, and how to actually perform a critical appraisal?

This interactive practical workshop will explore study quality and risks of bias, internal and external validity, in scientific publications of animal experiments. Participants will gain hands-on experience critically appraising published animal experiments.

Eligibility

Open to all researchers and students involved in conducting animal experiments in biomedicine.

Programme

Session 1: 

  • What is critical appraisal, what are risks of bias, and why should we care?
  • Methods for combating bias
  • Tools to critically appraise animal studies and how to use them: Think-Pair-Share activity

Session 2:

  • Journal Club: Critical appraisal of a primary study in your field of research and present it to your small group.
